The designation ‘UNESCO World Heritage Site’ was established in 1972 under the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Currently (2026), 1,273 sites are inscribed on the World Heritage List (991 cultural, 240 natural and 42 mixed properties in 173 countries). The key criterion for UNESCO World Heritage status is ‘Outstanding Universal Value’ (OUV). The UNESCO World Heritage Committee decides on inclusion on the World Heritage List.
