Discover the Roman heritage of the Danube region during the 12th edition of Limes Day in Bratislava. As part of the European Archaeology Days 2026, this unique cultural event connects the UNESCO-listed Roman sites of Gerulata and Carnuntum through guided experiences, archaeological tours, cycling routes and even rafting on the Danube.

Explore the Roman Danube Frontier

Limes Day 2026

Limes Day brings history to life through a full-day programme accompanied by archaeologists and guides. Visitors can travel between Slovakia and Austria while exploring ancient Roman military camps, archaeological parks and historical landscapes once forming the northern frontier of the Roman Empire.

The event offers several ways to experience the Roman Limes:

  • Danubelimes rafting adventure along the Danube from Austria to Bratislava
  • Cyclolimes cycling route between Bratislava, Carnuntum and Gerulata
  • Archeobus guided excursion with stops at major Roman heritage sites

 

Program:

Danubelimes – Rafting on the Danube

Experience the Danube like the Romans once did. Participants travel by minibus from Bratislava to Austria before rafting back to Karlova Ves under the guidance of professional instructors. Along the route, you’ll see the ruins beneath Braunsberg hill as well as Devín Castle at the confluence of the Morava and Danube rivers.

Admission: 35 € per person
Includes transport, equipment, safety briefing and guided rafting.

 

Cyklolimes – Roman Heritage by Bike

Cycle through the historic Danube region accompanied by archaeologists and local guides. Routes include stops at the Carnuntum Museum, Roman amphitheatre, Pagan Gate and Gerulata.

Participants wearing the official Limes Day T-shirt receive free admission to Carnuntum and Gerulata.

 

Archeobus – Guided Archaeological Tour

Travel comfortably between Bratislava and Austria while discovering Roman history with expert commentary. The route includes:

  • Gerulata
  • Ekocentrum Čunovo
  • Roman villa in Bruckneudorf
  • Carnuntum archaeological park

The tour includes guided visits, workshops and expert interpretation from Slovak archaeologists.
